- ➤ Friends of the McMinnville Library will host its first book sale of the year from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, in the Carnegie Room. Adult books cost $1, children’s books 25 cents, and CDs/DVDs sell for $1; a brown bag offer costs $5 at noon. News-Register

- ➤ Jeff Newton from Christensen Farms (near Amity) is investing in hazelnut trees amid challenges for other crops and a boost in hazelnut farming in the Willamette Valley; data show acreage has more than doubled over seven years and state production is expected to triple in coming years.
