  • Homeward Bound Pets spay and neuter clinic will move to a new location in a few months after an anonymous donor gifted a 3,800-square-foot building at 745 S.W. Hilary St.—the remodeled space will include a surgical suite for two veterinarians and extra room to care for more animals.  News-Register

CRIME NEWS

  • Residents in McMinnville are angry after wolf hybrid dogs killed pets and demanded answers Tuesday from city leaders—neighbors worry the repeated attacks show a growing safety issue.  News-Register
  • McMinnville man Steven Oliver Ryan (37) was sentenced on Friday, March 7 to 25 years for rape and an extra 100 months for additional sex crimes.  News-Register

CULTURE NEWS

  • Thousands will descend in downtown McMinnville on May 18, 2024 for the annual UFO Festival and local organizers say Oregon ranks as the fourth most likely state for alien encounters — a nod to decades of mysterious UFO reports. The event will highlight community displays and local interest in unexplained lights in the sky.  The Oregonian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Carlton Observatory at Evergreen will host its annual Science Fest on Saturday, March 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Evergreen Aviation + Space Museum with free admission; registration is required. The event features interactive workshops + hands-on experiments in science fields along with a 25-foot inflatable planetarium and a desktop satellite tracker built by a local teen.  News-Register

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Manager Jeff Towery said McMinnville must cut at least $3 million from its 2025-26 budget to counter rising costs.  News-Register
  • Oregon lawmakers are considering a bill to lower the retirement age from 53 to 50 for firefighters, police officers, and district attorneys after 25 years of service. Supporters say the change is needed—public safety workers are leaving for similar jobs in California and Washington.  The Oregonian
  • The city of McMinnville will hold a drop-in forum Saturday, March 15, from 10 a.m. to noon at Kent Taylor Civic Hall to update residents on plans for a new retail center plus a high density Innovation Campus on Three Mile Lane. City staff say that Walker Macy spent $384,000 on an 18-month study that will help set density limits and gather ideas for a planned neighborhood park.  News-Register
