CULTURE NEWS

  • Award-winning author Omar El Akkad will speak Wednesday, April 8 at Linfield University’s Nicholson Library on a free program sponsored by the university & McMinnville Public Library, featuring a book discussion on media, power and moral responsibility with university staff.  News-Register
  • The Oregon Memorial Traveling Wall was shown at the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum from March 27-29 to honor Oregon service members killed in Vietnam, a project by Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 805. Veterans, Legion members, and Boy Scouts guarded the memorial as it toured the state.  News-Register

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Pacific Power and PGE have approved rate increases for over 1.5 million Oregon residential customers effective today; PGE rates will rise by 5% (about $8 extra per month) and Pacific Power by 4% (over $5 extra per month) to cover higher fuel costs and grid investments.  The Oregonian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local educator Mark Hyder died of cancer at 75 on Tuesday, March 24. Funeral Mass and a public rosary will be held Tuesday, April 7 at St. James Catholic Church, with a reception to follow at Michelbook Country Club.  News-Register

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • McMinnville's planning commission will hold a public hearing on Thursday to consider new natural resource protections following years of community review.  News-Register

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Valley Panthers lost 51-43 in a 15s rugby match against the Beaverton Barbarians on March 7 at Western Oregon University, with new players making key plays; the team will host Canby at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 4 at Duniway Middle School.  News-Register
  • Mac baseball returned home with a 3-2 record after winning against 5A Bear Creek on Mar. 23 and then losing to Heritage on Mar. 24. Coach Todd Peterson said the team will refine baserunning and pitching ahead of their home game Tuesday at Patton Middle School vs Lakeridge at 4:30 p.m.  News-Register
  • Linfield Wildcats improved their season by winning three out of four games against Texas travelers after a week of tough losses to top-ranked Denison University & secured a 15-8 record in a competitive series near campus.  News-Register
