EDUCATION NEWS

  • McMinnville School Superintendent Debbie Brockett went on an open-ended leave on Friday (after receiving a positive evaluation) amid rumors that the board will consider termination of her contract at a meeting Monday night (6:30 p.m. at the district office, 800 N.E. Lafayette Avenue). District leaders will manage the 6,300-student system as the district faces budget shortages and possible federal funding cuts.  News-Register

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Astronomers discovered comet C/2025 F2 (SWAN) on March 29 and report that the green-tinted comet is visible now on the east-northeast horizon before sunrise. Sky watchers in McMinnville will see it brighten as it nears its closest pass on May 1.  The Oregonian

SPORTS NEWS

  • A Sports Memory Lane review recalled Yamhill County sports events from 10, 25, and 50 years ago — highlighting McMinnville track wins with 12 event victories at Wortman Stadium and a varsity baseball win with a complete seven‑inning game by local pitcher Bill Krueger. The review also noted an 11‑year‑old wrestler from Cook Grade School who won a state title and a spring backpacking class by Chemeketa Community College that still needs more students.  News-Register
  • After a loss last week to Lakeridge, the McMinnville baseball team won two shutout games by beating Nelson 7-0 on Friday and Silverton 2-0 on Tuesday—Coach Todd Peterson said strong pitching from Hyder and Brummitt helped move the team back into the Top 10 of the OSAA rankings.  News-Register
  • The McMinnville softball team won 10-4 over Barlow at Glencoe High School on Tuesday, led by senior Kaylee Dinger’s two home runs and strong hitting — but lost 3-2 to Jesuit on Wednesday after a late rally. Coach Josh Terry said the team showed resilience despite missing players and will work to improve their early game.  News-Register
