  • Kaye Sawyer and Jon Johnson will be honored as Woman and Man of the Year at the Distinguished Service Awards banquet at The Grand McMinnville on Wednesday, May 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $50 and include dinner provided by Harvest Fresh for the event celebrating local service.  News-Register
  • McMinnville Soroptimists will host the Sip for Success fundraiser on Thursday, May 21, at Evergreen Lodge. The event will feature a three-course dinner (with salmon and steak main courses), a sparkling wine reception, and a live auction to support women's education.  News-Register

CULTURE NEWS

  • On April 18, Linfield University hosted its 53rd annual Lu’au and ho’ike at Ted Wilson Gymnasium, where community members celebrated Pacific Island heritage with traditional food, music, and dance (featuring Maori chant and fire knife dancing).  News-Register

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Utility employees warned that ongoing litigation over salmon migration may raise power rates in McMinnville in future months — a U.S. District Court ruling in February set the stage for potential bill increases.  News-Register

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The McMinnville School Board will consider a reduction in force statement during its meeting Monday, Apr. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the district office, 800 N.E. Lafayette Ave — the proposal would notify unions of layoffs if required while later sessions review facilities and evaluate Superintendent Kourtney Ferrua.  News-Register

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • McMinnville officials and consultants unveiled a new 640-acre area plan for the southwest zone that includes a future school site, wide sidewalks, trails, parks, high-density housing, and commercial centers. The plan will be refined with community input before it is adopted this summer.  News-Register

  • Douglas Bailey led the Linfield men’s golf team to a playoff win at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club, earning Player of the Year honors while the baseball + softball teams secured wins and now look forward to NCAA play and tournaments in Tacoma.  News-Register
