- ➤ Senate Bill 686 advanced in the Rules Committee (vote of 3 to 2) and now heads to a full Senate vote that will require major tech companies to pay Oregon newsrooms at least $104 million annually while offering an arbitration option for a different rate; supporters say the funds will pay for local journalism while tech groups, including Google and Meta, warn the law may face legal challenges. - ➤ Oregon’s fire marshal signed a memorandum with Roy Wright from the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety on Friday to launch a program that offers wildfire certificates to single-family homeowners who clear a 5-foot buffer around their homes. Insurers may use the certification to lower rising property insurance premiums—Gov. Tina Kotek and state officials said the move will help keep coverage available as wildfire risks increase.
