CULTURE NEWS

  • Jason Martell — a ufologist from Ancient Aliens — is set to speak today at 9:30 a.m. at the McMinnville Community Center during the annual UFO Festival, where he will explain his research on aliens in ancient history. The event also features a downtown parade and vendor fair.  News-Register
  • McMinnville marks its sesquicentennial (150th) with a UFO Festival parade today, followed by community events including an American Past Times exhibit on June 27 and fairs in July and August. The News-Register will share historic newspaper issues as part of a local history project.  News-Register

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than two dozen high school athletes from McMinnville and Amity had a joint signing day on Wednesday, May 13, as officials recognized their achievements in academics and sports. The ceremony celebrated the athletes’ transition to college while highlighting strong team spirit.  News-Register
  • McMinnville School Board will hold an in-person work session at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 18 at the district office (800 N.E. Lafayette Ave.) to review the 2026-27 budget and key issues, including a closed executive session with legal counsel. The board then meets with budget committee lay members at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 20 in person and on Zoom.  News-Register

  • City officials in McMinnville have not yet announced when they will resume talks on System Development Charge increases—developers warn that the fee hike could raise local rent and home prices.  News-Register

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Grizzlies lost 2-4 to Sherwood on Wednesday as Bates delivered a key 2-for-3 effort that drove home two runs. The team now prepares for three home games starting Monday at Baker Field against Central Catholic, Newberg on Tuesday and seniors versus Sheldon on Thursday.  News-Register
  • The undefeated Amity flag football team remains top-ranked and will compete as the No. 1 seed in the state culminating tournament. They recently shut out Scappoose (a 5-6 team) to earn the spot.  News-Register
