COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Retired Navy corpsman Mark Houston shared a Memorial Day reflection after celebrating 55 years of marriage while his wife underwent surgery (a bruise from a failed IV evoked memories of friend Dennis Spenelli’s upside-down tattoo from their Vietnam service) and he honored his late friend who died in action.  News-Register
  • Legion groups will lead Memorial Day ceremonies at several cemeteries on Monday, starting at Amity Cemetery at 9 a.m. and ending at American Legion Post 21 at 1 p.m., while local barbecues in McMinnville and Carlton support veteran programs and help families observe the holiday.  News-Register

  • Joyce Messina attended the Second Winds Community Band concert at the McMinnville Community Center on May 22, 2026 — the space-themed performance celebrated galaxies and aliens while conductor Mark Williams shared fun facts about the UFO Festival.  News-Register

EDUCATION NEWS

  • McMinnville School District seeks a new board member as Abbie Warmbier resigns in June to move out of state; candidates must be 18+ a registered voter and have lived in the district for at least a year. Applications are due by noon on Tuesday, June 2.  News-Register

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Grizzlies won their final regular-season series with an 11 to 1 victory against Glencoe at Patton Middle School on Monday and will travel to Beaverton for the first round of playoffs.  News-Register
  • On Thursday in McMinnville, Linfield softball routed Moravian by run rule with key hits including Breanna Bartek’s as they secured their 10th chance at a national championship. The Wildcats will play again Friday at 1 p.m. — a potential third game at 3:30 p.m. if needed.  The Oregonian
  • Three Yamhill County softball teams (YC, Dayton, and Willamina/Sheridan) earned spots in the 3A State Championship tournament; YC and Dayton will host first-round playoff games on Wednesday while the Bulldogs host Pleasant Hill on Monday. Local boys volleyball and baseball teams also lost matches in their playoff rounds.  News-Register
  • Mac’s junior golfer Mabel Findley placed 14th at state on Monday and Tuesday at OGA Golf Course in Woodburn — she shot 82 on Monday and 80 on Tuesday and is refining her game for future meets.  News-Register
