COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Yamhill County Fair and Rodeo will run from Wednesday, July 30 to Saturday, Aug. 2 and will feature animal shows, a carnival, youth rodeo events, and a demolition derby starting Saturday at 6 p.m. Evening concerts will feature acts including Chayce Beckham on Wednesday, Easton Corbin on Thursday, Tone Loc and Digital Underground on Friday, and Alien Ant Farm on Saturday—tickets include admission to all events.  News-Register
  • Today, Amity Day will feature a parade starting at 10 a.m.—the event will have floats, horses, and vendors in Amity City Park until 6 p.m. On Sunday, July 27, a pancake breakfast will begin at 6 a.m. serving plain and blueberry pancakes with ham, eggs, and juice while funds help volunteer firefighters buy new equipment.  News-Register

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association conference on July 18, the News-Register won the General Excellence Award for newspapers of its size from Oregon, Washington and Idaho in the new Pacific Northwest News Contest. The paper also received six first-place, six second-place and five third-place awards for overall content, design and photography—showing strong newsroom work—according to the conference results.  News-Register

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Linfield University released a second draft of its Balanced Budget Initiative that cuts programs and will reduce faculty and staff to fix a nearly $5 million deficit. The Academic Council reviewed the proposal on July 10 and will vote on it by Sept. 11, with final decisions by Sept. 30—students and affected faculty await the outcome.  The Linfield Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • McMinnville voters will decide on a $98.5 million bonds measure for parks and recreation upgrades after the city council unanimously approved the plan on Tuesday.  News-Register
  • A report from the Prison Gerrymandering Project at Prison Policy Initiative said that Oregon districts with prisons have more voting power because inmates are counted as living at correctional facilities instead of their last known address. Lawmakers had proposed changes in House Bills 2250 and 2704 to improve equal representation—an effort aimed at addressing the imbalance before the 2030 Census.  The Oregonian
  • On Friday, the Oregon Lottery Commission will review proposed rules that ban international ticket sales via online couriers and limit bulk purchases of draw games and Scratch-It tickets—measures designed to protect game integrity, state revenue, and comply with federal law. Public comments on the proposals will be accepted until Aug. 29.  The Oregonian
