  • At Mt View Orchards, retired horticulturist Steve Castagnoli from OSU Extension says gardeners should test pears by tilting them until they snap and change color while apples turn from green to mostly yellow when ripe. He adds that pears are best picked a little early since they ripen further in cold storage—advice that helps guide fall harvests.  The Oregonian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oregon workers see stronger labor protections as new laws that took effect Friday ban employers from asking for age and graduation details until after an interview and expand the appeals process for paid leave benefits. The rules come as the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries receives a nearly 31% budget boost—helping clear wage theft backlogs.  The Oregonian
