COMMUNITY NEWS

  • McMinnville residents wrote letters debating bond measure 36-237—which would fund a new rec center, library, parks and river access—with some urging votes yes for community upgrades and others warning that higher taxes and rising utility costs could hurt local families.  News-Register
  • In McMinnville, Third Street will be closed from 4 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 31 to let children in costume trick or treat while local shops hand out candy—organizers have scheduled additional events like trunk or treat gatherings and community festivals across the county. The planned activities aim to offer a safe, fun Halloween for families in the area.  News-Register

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The McMinnville School Board will meet Monday, Oct. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the district office at 800 NE Lafayette Avenue — the session will also be available on Zoom to review district properties, high school science, the budget process and a board self-evaluation.  News-Register

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Community, Parks and Recreation Political Action Committee is holding a town hall today at 3 p.m. at Kent Taylor Civic Hall to explain a $98.5 million bond measure that would build a new rec center and update city facilities before the Nov. 4 vote. If voters approve the bond, it will pay for a $72.5 million rec and aquatics center, $9 million for library and senior center work, park upgrades and redevelopment of the old aquatic center—plans that could change local services.  News-Register

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local suicide prevention efforts have grown after the tragic deaths at Mac High and of Mayor Kim Morris’ granddaughter, prompting the Morris family to start a scholarship fund and advocacy group—LoveLikeMikalynn—and Rep. Lucetta Elmer to pass a bill declaring Oct 9 Youth Suicide Awareness Day while Yamhill County Public Health offers free training programs to support those at risk.  News-Register
