EDUCATION NEWS

  • Recent federal policy changes have tightened student loan rules and reduced financial aid, adding pressure to declining enrollment at colleges like Linfield. Data shows enrollment rose from 2023 to 2024 but remains below pre-pandemic levels, and high school graduates are projected to drop from next fall until 2041—forcing students to explore costlier funding options.  The Linfield Review

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • OSU Extension Service offered simple gardening tips for November to help Oregon gardeners prepare for winter by planting cover crops and taking care of equipment. The advice urges low-toxicity pest control and proper maintenance of lawns and plants for a healthier garden.  The Oregonian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday evening, Gov. Tina Kotek declared a 60-day food security emergency two days before the federal food stamps cutoff—directing the Department of Human Services to send $5 million from unspent federal funds to food banks statewide. Some lawmakers called for faster action to help the families who depend on SNAP benefits.  News-Register

SPORTS NEWS

  • The No. 5 Dayton Pirates beat Salem Academy in three sets on Oct. 25 to win the PacWest title — they will play in the State Championship tournament today at 3 p.m. Other teams, including Amity, Delphian, Yamhill Carlton, Willamina and Sheridan, ended their seasons with growth and awards such as Liv Curry being named Tri-River Player of the Year and Kaylee Spaulding earning a First-Team spot.  News-Register
  • The McMinnville girls varsity soccer team earned a playoff berth in the 6A State Championship after a scoreless draw on Monday night at Wortman Stadium. The team ended the season with a 7-2-5 record + 2-0-4 in conference play as they marked senior night.  News-Register
  • On Oct 25, Dayton's boys soccer team won its second Special District 2 title by defeating Blanchet Catholic in a penalty shootout after storm delays — earning a first-round state playoff bye for their game on Nov. 5. Amity's girls team secured its fourth consecutive title with a 3-0 win over Blanchet Catholic and will host a playoff match on Nov. 4.  News-Register
